Two Linguapax Asia board members, Cary Duval and Biba Jelisava Sethna, participated at the JALT 2017 conference which was held from November 17 to November 20 at Tsukuba International Congress Center, Tsukuba University, Ibaraki Prefecture.
They set out a Linguapax Asia booth in the All-Purpose Hall where JALT SIGs and international partners displayed their information desks. The booth displayed a poster with photographs of Linguapax events and publications to celebrate 30 years of Linguapax activities; together with Linguapax Asia publications and info sheets. During the day, visitors to the booth had a chance to find out more about our organisation as well as test their knowledge of languages of the world with a Linguistic Diversity test.
Cary and Biba also gave a workshop titled Language for Peace: language ecology in the classroom and they took part in the International Forum where each JALT International partner, including Linguapax Asia, gave a 5-minute presentation on the theme: Shaping the
Classroom, Shaping the World in a Global Age. The presenters from 10 different Asian countries shared stories on how they prepare their students to thrive in a multicultural world with new communication technologies and borderless learning. They also addressed approaches and challenges found in their countries including policy considerations and typical teacher/learner attitudes. Biba again introduced the Linguapax project and Linguapax Asia activities in particular, and invited the international delegates to take part in the Linguapax Asia 2018 symposium which will be held at the same venue, Tsukuba University, on June 23rd 2018.
