First meeting of creators in native languages in Mexico City

The First Meeting of Creators in Original Languages was organised within the framework of the “Linguistic Revitalization through the Arts project”. It took place in the facilities of the Tlalpan History Museum and in the Casa Chata of the Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS) on  October 12 and 13, 2017, in Mexico City, under the auspices of the National Council of Sciences and Technology, Linguapax  Latin America and the Delegation of Tlalpan, and with the support of the Catalan Government (Ministry of Transparency and Foreign and Institutional Relations and Affairs)

The artists involved were: Morales (rap-mazateco), Juan Sant (rap-totonaco), Mixe-Represent (rap-mixe), Celerina Sánchez and his Project Blues Savi (poems in ñuu savi), and María Reyna (soprano-mixe ) and the Tlakakilistlaltikpak group “The sounds of the Earth (Nahuas)”.

The dynamics of the event was two-fold: in the morning, in a roundtable discussion, the creators could explain both their experiences as creators in their native language, and the contribution by their artistic creation to the revaluation and revitalization of their languages within and outside their communities. In the afternoons, each artist took the stage to delight the audience with their different artistic expressions, from a rap to pieces sung with operatic vocal technique, through poems in ñuu savi (“mixteco”) musicalized with harmonica at the rhythm of blues.

All the creators agreed on the importance of having such forums where languages find a space of coexistence and appreciation, of becoming visible to a reality that has historically ignored them.  The organisers will seek to continue organising such encounters on a regular basis to promote minority languages through art, providing spaces for the expression of languages and their creators, as excellent and powerful vehicles for linguistic revitalization and development.
