Presentación

Linguapax North America is represented by the Endangered Language Fund, based in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. ELF was founded ten years ago with the goal of supporting endangered language preservation and documentation projects. Our main mechanism for supporting work on endangered languages has been funding grants to individuals, tribes, and museums. ELF's 97 grants have promoted work in over 30 countries and have seen a wide range of projects, from the development indigenous radio programs in South Dakota, to recording of the last living oral historian of the Shor language of western Siberia, to the establishment of orthographies and literacy materials to be used by endangered language teaching programs all over the world.

Mission Statement:

The Endangered Language Fund is devoted to:

  • The scientific study of endangered languages.
  • The support of native efforts in maintaining endangered languages.
  • The dissemination, to both native communities and the scholarly world, of the fruits of these efforts.

Our programs consists of:

  • Grants to endangered language groups and scholars.
  • A large digital archive of rare and valuable language material.
  • An education and outreach program for high schools and middle schools.

In February 2006, Nick Emlen of ELF traveled to Barcelona to meet with the members of the Linguapax Institute and to establish the North American branch of the International Network. ELF is proud to represent the Network as the North American delegation, and we will collaborate with the other delegations on projects involving endangered languages in North America and around the world.
