The Linguapax declaration on the judgement as unconstitutional of article 6.1 of the Statute of Catalonia receives wide international support.

Published 07/02/2010

The judgement passed by the Constitutional Court of the Spanish State, which declared as unconstitutional article 6.1 of the Statute of Catalonia - which recognised Catalan as Catalonia's own language and ensured its preferential use in Public Administration bodies and teaching - worries linguists and activists. Concerned about respect for cultural and linguistic rights all over the world, linguists and activists have signed the Linguapax declaration against this judgment. They have sent messages supporting the Linguapax declaration and expressed indignation about the demeaning attitude that the judgement represents in terms of the recognition of linguistic diversity.

The declaration has been signed by members of the Linguapax delegations worldwide, by the Linguapax Advisory Board and by other outstanding personalities. These include Vigdis Finnbogadóttir, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Languages and former president of Iceland; Joshua A. Fishman, professor emeritus at Yeshiva University, New York, one of the fathers of modern sociolinguistics and general editor of the International Journal of the Sociology of Language; Nicholas Ostler from the UK, the chairman of the Foundation for Endangered Languages; Tove Skutnabb-Kangas, a well known international activist in favour of linguistic rights.

The number of messages supporting the declaration is increasing daily.
