Speaking one's mother tongue is vital
06/06/2011.
And this is why you've got people like Noel Pearson saying that Aboriginal people, Aboriginal kids, need the very best general Australian academic education, but they also need a decent education in their own high culture. Now, I think this is a very lofty goal that Noel has put forward, but if you look at people like Alison Anderson and Bess Price, they are fluent in many Aboriginal languages. They are people of law and culture and language, but they are also extremely capable of operating at the very top of the general Australian community. Now, that's got to be the aspiration that we have for Aboriginal people. - Tony Abbott to Chris Uhlmann, ABC1's 7.30, April 28

Distinct Mix Holds On in a Corner of China
02/14/2011.
Long before words like “multiculturalism” and “fusion cuisine” entered the modern lexicon, Aida de Jesus and her forebears were mashing up food, language and DNA from far-flung corners of the globe. ENGLISH is the most successful language in the history of the world. It is spoken on every continent, is learnt as a second language by schoolchildren and is the vehicle of science, global business and popular culture. Many think it will spread without end. But Nicholas Ostler, a scholar of the rise and fall of languages, makes a surprising prediction in his latest book: the days of English as the world's lingua-franca may be numbered.

He was one of the founding fathers of the Linguapax philosophy and had been awarded ex aequo the Linguapax Prize 2010.
He was to receive this award during a delivery ceremony to be held at the Universitat de Barcelona next 21 May. The ceremony will take place as planned and will give us the occasion to pay tribute to one of our most outstanding scholars and pioneering activists for the promotion of multilingualism.
Miquel Siguan's passing away represents a great loss for the international community of efforts in favour of multilingual education and culture and very sad news for the Linguapax family
