On 21 May 2010, the Department of Linguistic Diversity-Linguapax of the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia will award the Linguapax Prize 2010, that was given on 21 February to Miquel Siguan i Soler, Catalan, professor emeritus at the University of Barcelona, and Robert Phillipson, British, professor emeritus at the Copenhagen Business School. Unfortunately, Prof. Siguan passed away on 8 May.
The Award ceremony will be a tribute to his person and his work.
It will begin at 12.30 pm at the University of Barcelona (Aula Capella), and will be open to the public.
This prize is an important international acknowledgement, awarded every year to outstanding linguists, researchers, teachers and members of the civil society for their commitment to preserving linguistic diversity, promoting multilingual education or developing revitalization community based projects.
This year there are two ex aequo awarded, which are Miquel Siguan i Soler, Catalan, professor emeritus at the University of Barcelona posthumously, and Robert Phillipson, British, professor emeritus at the Copenhagen Business School.
Miquel Siguan works to develop multilingual education as a vector for peace and intercultural comprehension through promoting the teaching of languages from multiple perspectives - philosophical, psycholinguistic and pedagogical - thereby inspiring Linguapax philosophy.
Robert Phillipson is known worldwide for his activism against linguistic imperialism, for showing the relationship between language and power and the dynamics of linguistic domination/subordination, described in many publications translated into different languages.
