Introduction.
The European Language Council/Conseil européen pour les langues (ELC/CEL) is an
organisation of universities, other institutes of higher education and professional associations.
Its aim is the quantitative and qualitative improvement of knowledge of the languages and culture within the European Union and beyond (see http://www.fu-berlin.de/elc). Its President is the dynamic Wolfgang Mackiewicz from the Freie
Universität Berlin, Germany. This paper describes some aspects of the association's recent
activities with special emphasis on European language policy, thematic network projects and the ELC's contribution to teacher education. We refer to the associations's website for other aspects of its activities.
