The Inuit people live in scattered communities along the Artic coastline including parts of the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, in some regions of northeastern Manitoba and traditionally on the Arctic Ocean coast of Yukon.
Until only 50 years ago, most Inuit lived in isolated camps. The search for work has motivated modern-day migration to cities, resulting in speakers of distinct Inuktitut dialects living side by side.
With the launch of its new, award-winning website Pirurvik, an Iqaluit-based center makes Inuktitut language and culture lessons freely available online. The page offers lessons in pronunciation, the Inuktitut writing system, dialogues and dialects.
