Call Deadline: 31-Mar-2011

Meeting Description:

Bielefeld University invites you to participate in an international symposium in conjunction with the International Postgraduate Forum (IPF) from May 5-6 2011 to launch the Center for Inter-American Studies (CIAS).

Massive movements of people between different regions of the world have created a growing diversity of global diasporas. While earlier periods of the capitalist world system involved the voluntary and forced movement of populations, in the late twentieth century international migration reached a watershed in the massive numbers of migrants and in the great diversity sending and receiving communities. A major characteristic is the migration from so-called peripheral regions (Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean) to so-called core societies of the capitalist world system like the United States of America or Great Britain. Starting in the age of industrial capitalism and accelerating in the age of advanced capitalism, this migration significantly affects racial, ethnic, and gender relations in Western societies as well as in the sending ones. One of the most significant phenomena within global movement is the massive inter-American migration which produces profound demogr!
aphic changes both north and south and produces a host of translocal and transnational communities with growing political and economic influence both in the host as in the home countries. As major cities become increasingly incorporated into the world economy, relations within and between global diasporas that seek their temporary home in these urban centers become increasingly sensitive to transnational flows and international developments.
