Indigenous Languages Officially Recognized In Panama

The Panamian authorities have officially recognised the indigenous languages of Panama. This they claim will mean that all the langauges of the Ngäbe, Bugle, Kuna, Embera, Wounaan, Naso Tjerdi and Bri Bri peoples will be taught in schools along side Spanish.

"The enactment of this law is undoubtedly a "breakthrough" for Panama, because it recognizes and appreciates the traditions, culture and language of its seven indigenous peoples, said the poet Arysteides Ikuaiklikiña Turpana of the Kuna."
