Director Chen Wen-pin’s movie, Everlasting Moments, written entirely in the Atayal language was shown at Germany’s Mannheim-Heidelberg film festival and was well recieved by the audience.
Atayal is one of Taiwans’ many languages, spoken by approximately 85,000 people. While it is not considered endangered. It is an important step in promoting indigenous languages.
Other languages spoken in Taiwan include Mandarin, Hakka, and Min Nan (Chinese), Japanese, Thao, English, Amis and many others. Taiwan also has several endangered and extinct languages, such as the extinct Basay and the nearly extinct Babuza.
