New Language Policy Threatens Tertiary Education Access in Tibet

The new policy which will have Chinese as the main teaching language in schools by 2015 may result in grave socio-economic consequences among the Tibetan population in China. Today “70% of private sector jobs, half of all public sector jobs go to Han Chinese” and 40% of Tibetans are unemployed in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. This could prevent most Tibetans from being able to adequately compete in the education and employment arena as the Han Chinese will always have an unfair advantage over them in all sectors.
