The input of the Catalan education system
Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at 6:00 pm, Auditorium of the Department of Education of the Generalitat (Vía Augusta, 202-226 – Barcelona)
This TALK with Professor Joseph Lo Bianco is aimed to reflect and discuss the strategic lines designed by the Catalan Department of Education to draft and implement a genuine multilingual and intercultural educational model in Catalonia.
A model that responds to the recent changes in the technological, demographic, commercial and cultural fields, and takes up the challenges they pose from the perspective of teaching and learning. Globalisation and technology are continuously modifying our way of communicating, relating and learning, so our students need a solid and effective multilingual and intercultural competence that enables them to better understand the world, to act in a globalised society, to interact in a flexible and respectful way with people of diverse linguistic and cultural origins, and to contribute more actively and positively to the construction of a cohesive and plural society.
Joseph Lo Bianco is Professor of Language and Literacy Education at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education – University of Melbourne, and a specialist in multilingual and intercultural education. He is a member of the Advisory Board of Linguapax. He has directed projects related to the revitalisation of the languages of indigenous and immigrant communities, participated in processes of reconciliation and peace through education and advised several governments in these fields. In 1987 he drafted the Australian Language Policy Act, the first multilingual language policy in an English-speaking country, and was an advisor for LUCIDE, Integration and Diversity for Europe, a project of the European Commission on languages in urban communities.
Mònica Pereña and Pérez, is the president of Linguapax and the Deputy Director General of Language and Multilingualism of the Generalitat.
